The Environment is Priceless! Traditionally, polyester fabrics have offered some distinct advantages over natural fabrics, including a longer life cycle. Now, these same advantages can be achieved with products using recycled polyester fabrics and fibers. An added bonus to using l00% recycled polyester products is that they, too, can be recycled at the end of their usable life.
Recycled polyester is derived from recycled plastic containers. In 2006, in the U.S. alone, there were 5.425 billion pounds of plastic containers available for recycling. Recycled polyester fibers can be used to create fiber fill for duvet inserts and other quilted items, and can also be woven info decorative fabrics for use in hotel bedding and draperies.
Easy care: Fabrics made from recycled polyester are low-pilling, have great dimensional stability and are highly resistant lo wrinkling. Harsh chemicals are not needed to launder polyester.
Saves energy: Recycled polyester can be laundered less frequently, therefore using less water. In addition, energy savings result from the lower temperatures required for drying and ironing is not usually needed.
Conserves resources: Use of recycled polyester decreases demand for the petroleum-based products used to manufacture virgin polyester. In addition, the creation of "greenhouse" gases-an outcome of manufacturing petrochemicals-can be avoided.
Renew and reuse: The plastic used in recycled polyester fiber prolongs landill life through the use of discarded containers that would otherwise occupy landfills. Use of recycled polyester products demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and creates a new recycling stream when the recyclable polyester products are recycled.
